Tools of the trade: finding royalty-free images
Useful tools for blogs and websites. Part 3.

Images are useful tools to set the mood of a blog or website; they attract the attention of readers and let people know at a glance what is the topic of the article they are about to read.
Finding good images that are royalty-free, however, can be very hard if you are not a photographer or an artist. While I don't like to use many images in my blog – I prefer it to be as feather-light as possible unless I post my art – there are four services I often use: Subtle patters, Find Icons, Pixabay, Unsplash .
- Subtle patterns is my go-to website for finding background patterns for websites and blogs that look appealing without being so loud that they steal the scene (or make the eyes bleed). The background of this blog comes from Subtle patters.
- Find Icons is, in my opinion, the best source of icons for websites: icon collections in many different styles and sizes are great for personalisation and coherence. The teacup in this blog's title comes from Find Icons. Pay attention to the credits section of each collection to make sure you can use the icons freely.
- Pixabay has more than one million images and videos, and some really stunning photos. The reason why I love it, though, is the huge collection of beautiful vector graphics. Sometimes a photo doesn't look quite right, and a pretty vector illustration is what a website needs.
- Unsplash is perfect for finding beautiful, hi-resolution photos that can be used for websites, flyers, or any other project requiring a good image. There are enough categories to cover most needs, and the pictures are truly stunning. The picture in this post comes from Unsplash.
